This was the first action, an action of thought. In the beginning, the Holy One that was a Unity had no name. It could not have a name, because to have a name would signify that there was something that was referred to by that name, and something that was not that. This would have been two, not one. And so, the Unity had no name. Yet, it was aware of itself in its beingness as a subjective experience. It could not view itself from outside itself because there was no ‘outside’ or ‘inside, no ‘above’ or ‘below.’ Thus, it lived without reflection, but only with existence, because there was no external ‘self’ to reflect upon the ‘self.’ There was only subjectivity. There was only experience.
This Unity wanted to know itself, to view what it was, as if seeing it from afar. And so arose a primary desire for self-reflection, and for an awareness that exceeded what had been the subjective awareness of its own being. The primary desire arose to become something more than it had been, more than it was, in order to know itself better. This was the first action which was an action of thought, an intention, the desire to know itself better.
In order to do this, it had to extrude part of itself so that it could view itself. It had to create objectivity out of subjectivity. Thus, Creation came into being, the means by which the Nameless Holy One could view itself from another part of itself. Creation was not the original unity, but was part of the original Unity containing the same existence. One could say “a different version of itself,'” or an objective version of what had been pure subjectivity.
The first action brought about the first duality that was Creator-Creation, or, as we sometimes know it, as Father-Mother Spirit, two parts of the same thing. And as soon as objectivity came into being through the extruded part of what had previously no name, other names came into being which distinguished one thing from another. The first pair, Creator-Creation was the beginning of the naming of all things that no longer existed within themselves but in relation to each other. And yet all were still held within the original Unity, for there was nothing else.
As part of this process, time came into being, for the state of becoming when merged with objectivity became Creation passing through time. Space came into being for the same reason, so that the ‘self’ could view the ‘self’ from the perspective of the seer and the seen. Relationship of one thing to another came into being. And yet all were still held within the original undifferentiated Unity which they had never left. The personality was a divine structure that was part of the purposes of Creation, and not an obstacle in the way of its purposes.
Forms that contained consciousness came into being, forms that would be able to carry consciousness of both objectivity and subjectivity, some more of one than the other. Thus, density came into being, with the more dense forms having a view, primarily, of objectivity, and the less dense forms having a fuller view of the original Unity. Within this array of consciousness were many forms that were evolving through space and time. In order to do so, it was necessary to have an internal structure that would allow this to be the case in an ongoing way so that the ‘Self” could continue to view itself within the state of duality. For this, the personality was needed. The personality or external self as we understand it within the framework of human experience, allowed the self to view itself through time and over space through the perception of an objective reality. One could say that it ‘solidified’ the form of each being and held it in place so that the purposes of Creation could be fulfilled.
The personality was not an obstacle to the purposes of Creation, but part of the means through which the Self could view itself. It was also a way in which the individualized form could know itself as separate from the original Unity, and separate from every other form of life. The personality was a divine structure that was part of the purposes of Creation, and not an obstacle in the way of its purposes.
Nevertheless, there was, within the original intention of the nameless Holy One, an internal clock or timetable that had to do with the extrusion of Creator into Creation. Activity had to become rest. Dispersion had to return to Unity when enough self-awareness through objectivity had been accomplished. And so, the withdrawal of the Self of Creation back into the Self of the nameless Unity was also part of the plan for Creation, but over a very, very long arc of time.
